Monument record MDR8487 - Cairn (T39), Stanton Moor

[SK 2461 6304]: T39. This feature first appears in the archaeological record depicted on a location map of numbered 'tumuli' on Stanton Moor. (1) Although no excavation report was published for this cairn, it is known that some level of excavation was undertaken by the Heathcotes, probably during the period 1934-1938. (2) Subsequent field investigation by the OS Archaeology Division in 1966 failed toidentify this cairn. (3) A later survey gives measurements for T39, listed as a cairn, 15 feet (4.5m) in diameter and 1 foot (0.3m) high. (4) SK 24603 63024: CAIRN. The cairn measuers 4.5m by 3.6m and has been robbed at the centre. It now appears as an almost circular stony bank. The material forming the cairn around the W and N arcs is a consolidated matrix of small and large stones with earth infill, this may suggest that this part of the cairn may not have been excavated by Heathcote. Disturbance in the hollowed centre of the cairn is probably excavation by Heathcote in a previously distrubed area. The monument presents the morphology of a prehistioric cairn, which has had a section at the S substantially altered and partially reassembled during excavation. (5)
