Full Description

[SK 2476 6286]: T22. It is known that some level of excavation was undertaken by the Heathcotes, probably during the period 1931-1933. (1) This feature first appears in the archaeological record depicted on a location map of numbered 'tumuli' on Stanton Moor, on this map T22 is one of a cluster of six cairns. Before excavation, T22 is described as being a simple, well-constructed cairn, 17' (5.1m) in diameter and 2.5' (0.7m) high with a kerb of large stones and, apart from a slight depression at the centre, was largely undisturbed. Excavation revealed one cremation and a piece of burnt flint at the base of one of the kerbstones, whilst a second urned creamtion was discovered W of centre. (2) Subsequent field investigation by the OS Archaeology Division in 1962 failed to identifiy the cairn, later investigation in 1966 located the cairn. (3) Later surveys describe T22 as a round cairn 4.5m in diameter and 0.6m high and with an arm link to T45 (4), and as having been partially excavated and restored, but being sub-circular, measuring 5.5m by 4.5m and originally having a kerb of vertical slabs. (5) SK 24765 62876: BURIAL CAIRN. The cairn is sub-circular in plan with an overall 5.0m diameter. The mounding has been replaced to a flat-topped height of .7m and is contained, in part, by a substantial kerbing. A slight disturbance occurs centrally at the summit of the mound. Circumscribing the mound is an excavation delineation trench, typical of the Heathcote technique of excavation. The arm link to T45 appears to be no more than a collapse of cairn material. (6)
