Full Description

[SK 2478 6300]: T53. This feature first appears in the archaeological record depicted on a location map of numbered 'tumuli' on Stanton Moor. (1) Although no excavation report was published for this cairn, it is known that some level of excavation was undertaken by the Heathcotes. (2) Subsequent field investigation by the OS Archaeology Division in 1966 described this cairn as having 'no intelligbile remains'. (3) In a later study a feature at the position indicated for T53 is recoded as being an excavation round cairn, 4m in diameter. (4) Later studies give measurements of 4.5m diameter and 0.45m high (5); and as being a flat-topped, sub-rectangular cairn (6). SK 24790 63018: CAIRN. The cairn appears as a sub-rectangular mound measuring 4.4m by 3.8m with a height of 0.4m. It is straight-sided at the S with a rectangular shallow hole near the centre. Circumscribing the mound is a Heathcote excavation delineation trench. Around the N and W of the cairn, the excavation trench cuts through the ballast bank of an early 20th c. animal drawn light railway. There is no clear evidence of a revetment kerb around the perimeter The original context and function of such a modified feature is difficult, and the present shape and size are probably not representative of the original form.
