Full Description

[SK 2480 6284]: T28. This feature first appears in the archaeological record depicted on a location map of numbered 'tumuli' on Stanton Moor. (1) Although no excavation report was published for this cairn, it is known that some level of excavation was undertaken by the Heathcotes, probably during the period 1934-1938. (2) Subsequent field investigation by the OS Archaeology Division in 1962 failed to locate this cairn. Further investigation in 1966 (3) led to depiction on the OS map (4) at SK 24807 62860 although it appears to have been mid-identified as T47. Later surveys describe the feature as: an excavated oval cairn with an apparent three cell construction (5); as having been excavated but not published, and "nothing more than a hollow with rubble" (6); and as 'small' (7). SK 24800 62860: CAIRN. The site of the cairn is marked by an irregular oval, rubble-filled depression measuring 6.1m by 2.8m max. Circumscribing the mound is a Heathcote excavation delineation trench. An upright slab forming the S edge of a marked depression may mark the remnants of a cist; an adjacent large loose stone may be a capstone. (8)
