A 'brass cuspis, or celt' was found in c. 1700 near Ryknield St in Wingerworth parish. Exact findspot unknown, but possibly in the area around SK 393 678.

Neolithic flints recovered above a Roman road during excavation sometime prior to 1976

Excavations at Station Road have uncovered evidence for both Roman forts at Chesterfield (see SMR 3970); and a possible third fort of slightly later date. Possible pre-Roman use was also indicated.
