Description

This record has been generated from an "old county number" (OCN) scheduling record. These are monuments that were not reviewed under the Monuments Protection Programme and are some of our oldest designation records. As such they do not yet have the full descriptions of their modernised counterparts available. Cromford and High Peak Junction in use until 1967, the railway having been begun in 1825, and opened in 1831. It was the transhipment point between the railway and the canal, and the workshops were used for the maintenance of the rolling stock. Externally, they are neat , rubble built structures with some surviving cast iron window frames. Inside there are some early fittings, the most striking being an inspection pit with cast iron fish belly rails on stone blocks, to carry the wagons. The offices are in a small building built against the side of a half-cutting. At the terminus of the railway a warehouse separates the track from the canal. The building is now partly in use as an outdoor activity centre, but it retains its original doors to allow wagons to pass and, over the track, a incam. On the wharf itself is the cast iron pillar of a handcrane. All the buildings are well maintained and repointed.< 1> < 2> SOURCES = Desc text/AM7/White PR/1976//< 1>; Desc text/AM107/Hart CR/1984//< 2>
